Colonel Toren Jax of the Cadian 506th. This model's a fairly simple conversion, all things considered, but a lot of fun at the end of it. The basis is the Kasrkin Sergeant - I took the pistol from his hand, his head and spent some time cutting away his power sword and the power feed into that to leave me with the 'bare' model I was going to use.
That pugnacious, square-jawed determination was something I decided early on I wanted to try and capture in the expression, and the Mordian meltagunner's head was perfect - down to the cap, at that. The power fist was cannibalised from another Cadian officer, the roll of his sleeve a simple green stuff bodge-job.
Finally, his plasma pistol was hacked out of Inquisitor Lorr's hand and carefully glued atop the power feed for the original hellpistol. That's right. I defiled a limited edition model for his gun.
The paint job took a couple of hours to complete. I like the simple highlighting, and the layering on his fatigues looks particuarly nice, in my opinion. The plasma burns around the muzzle of his pistol were achieved by various layers of ink, followed by a varnish.
Any other questions? I don't mind. Comment or send me a note. I'll answer anything!
Thanks a lot. I tried something new with paint glazes on his face to get a stubbly effect. I think it looks pretty good on the model; you can't see it so well on the picture, here, but trust me!

You're a master of your craft sir. That head is excellent, love that big chinned attitude. Sweetness man.

I really like painting scorch marks onto weaponry that would produce a lot of heat. Flamers, meltaguns and plasma guns are all done fairly easily.
What you want to do is to get a detail brush and both brown and black inks. Get some ink on your brush - about as much as you would use with paint - and start about halfway up the barrel of the weapon. What you want to do then is to run the brush up the length of the barrel, letting the little amount of ink on your brush pool at the barrel's tip. Do this about three or four times, steadily building up the colour. The last step is really easy. You just get a blob of black ink on your brush, wipe it around the very tip of the weapon, and job's a good 'un! Try it on a few of your heat-based guns, see what you think. I guarantee you'll barely regret it at all...

I've seen the same done on some weapons, sometimes using a little black at the same time. What I like to try and do when I'm highlighting - or painting over something, as in the case of the guns - is to leave the original colour as untouched as possible. That way you get a much more natural progression of colour, rather than solid blocks of different shades.
It's something I only really bother with on centerpiece figures, like my commanders, but it's something worth experimenting with. The stubble on Jax's face is done using the same technique - very watered down black paint right over the flesh, rather than painting a mix of flesh and black together.

That was the one thing I thought it was missing, to be sure. I thought about drilling a hole into his mouth and rolling up a fat ol' stogie, but I didn't want to ruin that stern look. Thanks for the comment!

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. I especially like the way you painted his gun. It looks like it's been used a lot

I'm used to just drybrush the weapons with tin blitz, which make them look a bit old
